We hear a lot about and service people, and rightly so. The things they have to go through in training and at work would shock the pants off most people, if they had any idea how hard it was.

Every day we take for granted a relatively safe and free existence but have no idea how that comes to pass. I’ve looked after a variety of different service people over the years, from all three arms of the services and various corps, wings and branches. With my conversations over the years, I am consistently amazed at what happens behind the scenes so that we can all sleep well at night.

The common factor is that all service people have their bodies placed under huge physical and mental stresses, which only increase as they become more specialised and elite. It may be lugging a 50kg backpack of ammunition for miles without end, or heavy parachute landings laden with gear or in a worst case scenario, capture, torture, injury and abuse. Not something that the rest of us have to endure at work.

Chiropractors in the Services?

For many years now Chiropractors have been eligible to enter the services in both the US army and Australian forces at the same rank as medical doctors. Chiropractic care has been available for veterans and current forces through their government health schemes.

A new US study has been conducted and published using service personnel, but is of huge importance to the entire community. 750 active military with chronic low back pain were treated with “Usual Medical Care” (medication, physical therapy and pain clinics) or Usual Medical Care plus Chiropractic over a 6 week period. For every demographic, the results were significantly better for the Chiropractic group with no serious adverse side effects.

So research has now shown that opioid medications (eg. Oxycontin, Codeine, Morphine), are ineffective as a first choice for back pain and that Chiropractic care is better than “Usual Medical Care” alone. In fact, several US states have now legislated that Chiropractic care or similar MUST be undertaken prior to prescription of opioid medications.

The next time you get the chance, thank a service person for their efforts. They really do go above and beyond what any of us know.
